chris, thank you for your comments. When you plug your USB device in, the directory:
/sys/bus/usb/devices/

is going to populate a new entry. For example, I plugged a USB devices in and got 4-2:1.0.

Could you please post the results of:
ls /sys/bus/usb/devices/NEWENTRY
