11. Rebooted with acpi_backlight=vendor (which had been my usual boot mode; symptoms noted in orginal report).

$ ls /sys/class/backlight > vendorbacklight

This reports:
intel_backlight
toshiba

13. As root:
ls -la /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/ > lslabacklight
