yes. I had a worse problem with Centos 4.4 copy speed < 1 mps. I'm downloading OpenSuse 10.3 and Centos 5.1 now. Also, I've heard of two possible avenues to explore:
1) add the boot time option of ide_combined=libata
note: this did not help me
2) edit /etc/initramfs-tools files to include your modules and libata and sata_$whatever (for me sata_promise) then add pata_$wahtever (pata_amd) to your module blacklist.
Note: if you're not really comfortable with this option you can make your system unable to boot. It's the next thing I'm going to try. The idea is that libata superceeds the kernel ata modules with might be conflicting with the sata modules.
