Same problem here, Ubuntu 7.10, with an ASUS A7N8X-XE, NForce2 chipset.

My harddisk is a Samsung HD250HJ SATA.

HDPARM results:

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 728 MB in 2.00 seconds = 364.02 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 40 MB in 3.16 seconds = 12.67 MB/sec

I compiled the 2.6.25.4 enabling de old SATA drivers, but the results are still the same.
