Same problem here on Hardy 2.6.24-12-generic,
Speeds vary between 5-10MB/s on a sata hard drive and Asus A8N-E motherboard copying large files (700mb) with nautilus
Speed reported by hdparm:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1418 MB in 2.00 seconds = 708.60 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 204 MB in 3.02 seconds = 67.56 MB/sec
