Slight misinformation, sorry. The initial issue with the "Power management discrepancy" message was resolved after bringing in an updated kernel. I was still unable to login (and the behaviour appeared similar) but in this case I was unable to login due to ~/.Xauthority being owned by root. chown david:david and it was fixed.
