I have an asynchronous DAC (HRT microStreamer) and I had the problem described in this bug with current kernel releases when setting the output to 88.2 or 96 KHz (just as a side note, it only happened with ehci ports, it worked correctly with xhci ports)
I've just tried 3.13rc6 which includes your commit to improve the buffering and it works perfectly!! No more crackling even at 96/24.
So it's fixed for me, thanks a lot for your time and your effort!! :)
