 This was a bit harder than I thought, because I don't know how to make
the live usb use a custom kernel. It doesn't boot with grub and my naive
attempts at tricking it to use my compiled kernel didn't work.

So I will find an older version of the kernel that I can use on the
problem box, and turn on USB debugging.
Exactly where in kernel config to I enable the necessary debugging options?
