Ok, I've just tried on vanilla 3.9.7 (will attach dmesg and config just in case). Using /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness *does* work. /s/c/b/intel_backlight/brightness works too.
Not to sure what xfpm uses, I can check if needed.
