Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.10 x64
Lenovo G585

I am unable to keep a constant connection using the ath9k module. It is constantly re-associating itself. I am also unable to go no
more than 4 feet from the AP before it completely drops connection and is unable to re-establish itself. I tired both Network-Manager and WI-CD and they both display the same results.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : Re: Unable to maintain connection with ath9k module

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem with this laptop and the Atheros AR9285. I have tried everything and it's still buggy. I tried to install a different wifi card but Lenovo BIOS did not let me do it. I have to use USB wifi adapter to connect. The internal card connects but it is very, very slow and disconnects by itself every once in a while.

rebooted and tested. same results. Signal is very unstable about 10 feet away from the router (constantly dropping and reconnecting) more than 10 feet away can't even make the connection. Get closer to the router (about 4 feet away) and it re-establishes the connection.

If you're looking for a possible workaround, I was having problems with my AR9485 wireless card (Sony Vaio, using ath9k) constantly disconnecting, and the problem went away when I connected using wifi-radar.

I believe I have discovered what the issue might be. I don't believe this is driver related in my case. What I did was opened up the bottom of the laptop and discovered that there is only one antenna lead (black) not 2. What I did was swapped the terminal that the wire was connected to, moved it from M to A. I then did some tests , walking away from the AP, then moving around the house and am able to maintain a stable connection.
