Bug Description

On boot I get the text message similiar to "microcode failed to load".

An investigation in the kernel.log shows:

Dec 2 14:29:35 user-HP-655-Notebook-PC kernel: [ 11.899267] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin

The boot of the system is verry slow, but there are not any obvious misbehaviours.

This occures since kernel 3.6.x. The kernel 3.5.x serie was not affected as far I can remember.

The full passage is:

I have the same problem.
Solution here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1945481.html
Install microcode from AMD, solved.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, you don't have to test the kernel in comment #4. I see this was opened against raring.

Personally I found the server did not respond when I tried loading the suggested link(s) at www.amd64.org but I managed to find this fix on the web:

sudo apt-get install amd64-microcode

This is also a problem in quantal.

If it is not possible to fix it with the kernel directly, the install system ubiquity for Ubuntu13.04 raring should givethe microcode package to the system from the extra repositories in the same way as it already do with additional codecs.

Can you ensure you have both the linux-image and linux-image-extra packages installed?

I am not so sure how I should undestand your question Joseph.

I have had two fresh installed systems: One raring one quantal and both are affected.

In this case I have had for sure installed the linux-image and linux image-extra-packages(you do not different or releases, or?).

Just for remembering you have yourself removed your testing request on manually installed kernels in

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1085627/comments/5

and I also see that as not needed.

The manually installation

sudo apt-get install amd64-microcode

solves the problem, even with prop. code (it is right?).

In this sense you can undestand
