Bug Description

Running on an Acer Aspire 4786.
Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2GHz
2GB RAM
Intel Corp. Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
(No Proprietary Drivers in use)

The screen goes completely black when booting from the liveUSB, whether the option is to "Install elementary OS" or "try... without installing".

This has happened to me before while using the Gnome Shell Remix of Ubuntu 12.04. The first few months of using 12.04 were fine; the problem appeared after an update (I can't remember the time period, specifically). At first I could use the desktop environment fine without any problems. As time went by, the screen would just go black for no apparent reason. It got worse as time went by, and pretty soon after every boot up the screen would black out.

I bring it up because maybe (I think) it's relevant to this problem. ('Course, could be a problem just on my end, in which case, that would suck even more).

The thing is - despite the black screen - the computer responds to input: for example, pressing super + some F(n) keys would occasionally cause the screen to flicker / display the login screen as one would see it normally for a split-second, showing the username / password fields. You can move the cursor, click around, and the system will respond - you just can't see anything.

Had some free time thanks to the holidays, so I decided to poke Beta 1 with a stick a couple of more times to see if I could get something more out of it.

Some other folks had a bit of the same blacks screen problem, and it seems their solution, found here...

http://askubuntu.com/questions/162075/my-computer-boots-to-a-black-screen-what-options-do-i-have-to-fix-it

... works quiet well for this particular problem. Using 'nomodeset' makes everything visible - both the solution for the installation and post-installation boot phases.

The only problem after this is that the screen resolution is maxed out at 1024 x 768 (4:3) and animations are choppy. The suggested solutions indicate that after using 'nomodeset' the user can then proceed to install the proper graphics drivers - this seems to be directed towards those who have either an ATI or Nvidia card; not sure how to proceed beyond this point having on-board intel graphics.

I'll see if I can get some more results by fiddling around a bit more.

Well, problem has been solved: got my screen working properly again, and everything is nice and smooth.

Turns out it's a screen backlight issue that seems to be common among Acer Laptops, coming in with ubuntu 12.04 (including a few that got affected as far back as 11.x).

Followed forum user CoDelishus' workaround found here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11578848&postcount=4

The only other few odd bits and ends is that once you get to the login screen, you still get a pretty much black screen... but this time you can use the function keys to brighten up the screen to normal. Also, the brighten/dim ends of that feature is also reveresed. Odd, but I'll take what works.

I guess this is probably a bug that should be reported elsewhere (not necessarily on elementaryos), is it?

Sounds like a kernel bug. Retargeting accordingly. Also tagging "regression-release" because it's reported to work on 10.04.
