I believe your focus on the Intel driver is correct. I originally had problems with 12.04 and it just got worse with 12.10. I believe it is the same problem discussed here:
If I had it to do over again I would have not used the word "random" in the bug title, it is 100% guaranteed it will crash when the external monitor is used. With 12.04 it happened with a day, with 12.10 it more like an hour and even faster for Keith. What exactly triggered the crash may be random the there is no doubt that it is the external monitor makes it happen.
