I get the same problem with the same description except that it only takes a few minutes.
My Hardware is HP Mini 110. It appears that it only works properly using 800x600 for the external monitor, but I can use native 1024x600 for the internal screen.
After a few minutes it freezes up in such a way that mouse movement can be seen but nothing can be clicked or typed. Forced rebooting with the power switch is the only option.
