The driver for this device is in the 3.6-rc1 and newer kernels with the following commit:

commit a89534edaaa7008992b878680490e9b02a665563
Author: Woody Hung <email address hidden>
Date: Wed Jun 13 15:01:16 2012 +0800

rt2x00 : RT3290 chip support v4

I'll see if this commit can be easily backported to Quantal.

I created a Quantal test kernel with commit a89534edaaa7008992b878680490e9b02a665563 applied. The test kernel can be downloaded from:

http://people.canonical.com/~jsalisbury/lp1078606/

Can you test this kernel and report back if it enables wireless? Note that you will need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Thanks in advance!

@mlchen,

Thanks for testing. Can you attach your syslog, or the section of syslog that has the error. It probably id due to missing firmware.

The upstream commit that fixes this bug may contain too many changes to be considered for SRU to Precise.

Would it be possible for you to test the backports-module? It can be downloaded from:

@Tim Chen, why would linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6[0] not work? The Linux Backports Module for Quantal should contain the change in the wireless 3.6 code.

I mentioned Precise in comment #8, but this bug is actually for Quantal.

@mlchen, Can you test linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6[0] with the latest Quantal kernel?

@Joseph

I've tried linux-backports-modules-cw-3.6[0] with latest quantal kernel[1] , and the wifi/bluetooth still not working.

And the work around for kernel 3.6.6 [2] will fix the wifi but not bluetooth[3].

According to realtek, the bluetooth device 1814:3298 needs a proprietary driver to work, due to something about their PCI-E design, they will not upstream it.

For the wifi, it can made to work with firmware in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1049466/comments/8.
