Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I am using the same machine, and I too face the same issue.

I installed the Mainline Kernel as per @jsalibury's request in comment #2. The issue remains, using the Fn+F9 keys to decrease brightness and Fn+F10 to increase brightness has no result.

Running apport against this bug fails as I am running the Mainline Kernel.
Please advise if I should modify the tags.

Apport does not work any more in ubuntu 12.10. Seems to be the same with other users. I assume this is by choice and I wont file a bug report about this.

Could you please perform the apport-collect following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Error:_The_launchpadlib_Python_module_is_not_installed ?

As well, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc3-raring/ ?

@Christopher M. Penalver:

Thanks for the apport instructions. Apport information is added.

Just retested with kernel 3.7 rc3. This solves a part of the problem. With kernel 3.7 rc3 my brightness settings are remembered. But using the Fn+F9 keys to decrease brightness and Fn+F10 to increase brightness still has no result.

As we have two different problems, Fn+F9/F10 toggling brightness, and brightness settings remembrance, let this report focus on just Fn+F9/F10 toggling brightness.

For more on this, please see the Ubuntu Bug Control and Ubuntu Bug Squad article:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue

and Ubuntu Community article:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette

You are welcome to file a new report about brightness settings remembrance via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

and feel free to subscribe me to it.

Hence, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc4-raring/ ?

Christopher, just tested with RC4. With this kernel the problem is fixed.

Didn't know what to do with bug report. For now i've set it on confirmed.

I'm going back to stable kernel 3.5 inless you have other tests to run for me.

p.s.
brightness settings are also solved with kernel 3.7, is there a need for me to report this? Does it help anyone?
