The consistent pattern is: it happens with 12.10.

I spent the last two nights fiddling with this.

1. Sometimes the installer will "crash" during installation.

2. Sometimes you can make it through the installation, but it won't fully boot (either hangs at starting X/window manager, or grub acts funny).

3. Sometimes you can fully boot, start an update, and the update crashes (and that's where you can see the "read-only filesystem" message).

4. Sometimes you can make it all the way through the first update, reboot, and the system won't fully boot (looks like it starts to fire up the window manager then it just sits there).

I'm running 32-bit with an AMD system and have tried multiple SATA SSD's and cables. I tried just cutting out the SSD and installing/running on a USB flash key, and that alleviates 1-3, but 4 still happens every time.

This looks like a filesystem issue; haven't had a chance to try reformatting root with ext3. Kinda dumped enough time on this as is.

Finally, I just gave up, went back to 12.04.1, on the exact same hardware, and everything runs perfectly, first shot.

System specs are fairly straightforward:

AMD A4-3300
MSI A55M-P33
2GB DDR3
1 SATA Blu-Ray
1 SATA SSD (Tried with two different drives with same results -- Torqx, and OCZ)
