Thanks for your help and the clear instructions. I've updated to the more recent kernel and this seems to have fixed it. Tags have been adjusted accordingly.

Can't actually confirm if it happened in an earlier release. It *may* have happened in an early release of 12.04 (upgraded from 11.10) and then been fixed by the first or second kernel update. (However that doesn't entirely make sense to me so may not be an accurate report and can be ignored if it doesn't make sense to you).
