Fairly often (not every time) the touchpad stops working properly after I leave the system idle and the screen blanks itself to save power (set to 10 minutes currently). When I try to use it, it's jittery, jumpy, and/or doesn't work at all and is unusable. This happens on my HP EliteBook 8460p laptop when the lcd is blanked. When it occurs the pointer stick (the pointery knob thats in the middle of the keyboard) still works. The solution to this is to unload and reload the psmouse driver.
sudo rmmod psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse
After doing this the pointer comes back after a couple seconds and works fine.
I'm using the fglrx driver if that is related.
And while I'm not 100% certain it seems that the longer I'm away the more likely it is to not work properly when I get back.
