Bug Description

Along with the bug posted at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/517934

I am not able to use this device. I have not, however, manually added the device ID and recompiled, as the original poster did.

Upon plugging it in, dmesg shows:

[21732.185356] usb 1-1.4.3: USB disconnect, device number 5
[22319.105209] usb 2-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd

and lsusb:

Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0711:5100 Magic Control Technology Corp. Magic Control Technology Corp. (USB2VGA dongle)

I will attach 'sudo lsusb -vvvv' also.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

What version of Ubuntu did you personally reproduce this problem in specifically?

At this point, we would not want to mark this a duplicate, or vice versa.

Thank you for your understanding.

I tested an old version of 9.10 and 10.04 as well.

The sisusbvga driver's device table does not include an entry for ID
0711:5100. You will have to add it to make the driver work, like the
original poster did.

The file to edit is drivers/usb/misc/sisusbvga/sisusb.c. Add an entry
to the sisusb_table[] array.

I also have a 0711:5100 device that didn't work with Lucid, and doesn't work with Precise. If I have enough spare time and energy (almost certainly no sooner than next week), I may try editing the file as suggested in comment #16. I assume that comment is expecting the kernel to be compiled from source, after the file is edited. If so, which sources should I use? (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc7-quantal/ for example contains only *image* *image-extra* and *headers* files, not sources.)

It's a long time since I used Gentoo and compiled kernels, so I'd appreciate any hints on the canonical (no pun intended) way of doing this in Ubuntu.
