I wouldn't think this is an ACPI / Kernel issue, since it only occurs when using the Trident driver (as part of Xorg), but has been reported not to occur when using the framebuffer provided through the kernel. (I will test this in detail once I have time.) The above solution in http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-533793.html does not work: The problem persists.
