Workaround (NOT FIX!) for everyone else affected:
Edit /etc/default/grub, adding "video=VGA1:d" between the quotes in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line, then run the command
sudo update-grub
in a terminal window. Reboot and the problem should be gone.
