I've reverted the work-around and reproduced this quite easily. The problem is, once this happens the kernel is locked up. I don't have the ability to run apport or even pull a copy of the logs for you.
Not sure how to get you the information you need here, any suggestions?
BTW:
To reproduce, do a clean devstack install in virtual-box:
1. create a 2 gig volume
2. create a snapshot of that volume
3. delete that snapshot
