Question #199715
Asked by ealthuis on 2012-06-07
I have a Dell laptop with the 1701 Dell Wifi card, also a router which provides Wifi at 2.4 GHz as well as at 5 GHz.
The 2.4GHz wifi works just fine, but I cannot connect to the 5 GHz Wifi.
Is there a driver that will correct that problem?

I downloaded and installed as suggested, both went witout errors. Reboot started the system correctly, but I have NO wireless at all. I am located within a metre of the router. That is neither 2.4GHz or 5GHz.
System monitor reads:

ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote : | #26 |
Now I need a way to remove the 3.5.0 kernel, or at least a way to access what I used to know as a 'menu.lst', so that I can go back to using the previously installed kernel which at least gave me 2.4 GHz
ealthuis (ealthuis) wrote : | #27 |
For what it's worth, I just installed and tried 3.5.0-rc7.
It did not provide any wireless connection either.
So back to 3.2.0----

Just installed Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2, there is no 5GHz connection, By earlier testing 3.5.0, I thought that the support for 5 GHz was to be included in version 12.10. I am sadly mistaken.

Confirming that this doesn't work for me either - same card & currently running 13.04 daily builds.

Sorry to have taken this long, however I wanted to try it twice.
I used the first suggestions (Upgrading the BIOS using Dell's "biodisk" and "syslinux memdisk")
I followed the instructions precicely, all went well until I started 3555A05.exe
The program started and asked one question only:
-Start to flash..
I entered Y and was rewarded with a flashing cursor
PERIOD
The first time this happened I waited about an hour before shutting down.
second try ditto
today I did it all over again, including downloading 3555A05.exe
Same result.
Here the output of the suggested commands:
bios-version : A03
bios-release-date: 08/09/2011

Kevin Pattison, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:

ealthuis, as per http://
What one would need is a dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) product, for example http://
Hence, this wouldn't be a limitation in Ubuntu (ex. linux kernel, Broadcom driver, etc.), but that of the hardware capabilities.
Thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Please feel free to report any future bugs you may find.

Thank you Christopher for finding the solution to the 5GHz question. I shall contact Broadcom to get the new (to me) BMC943224 card.
Your work at solving this problem is to be commended and much appreciated

I may add, that the 5GHz never worked, from the day I Installed Ubuntu Linux on this laptop in late Sept 2011. The computer was brand new, came with W7. I only ran W7 for a few days before improving the laptop to Linux.
