[HP EliteBook 8540p] linux-crashdump not producing coredump nor rebooting

Bug Description

Since Ubuntu Precise, linux-crashdump isn't working anymore for me. When I trigger a crash with:
echo 'c' > /proc/sysrq-trigger

the machine freezes. I see the disk-light blinking for a short time. But then, the host does not reboot automatically, and no dump-file is in /var/crash. With Oneiric everything worked as expected.

The issue remains on Ubuntu 13.04. Please, does anybody has any hints for me?

I tried out removing the arguments as explained in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/CrashdumpRecipe#Troubleshooting, without success.

Thanks!
Christoph

I will run again an "apport-collect" to update the info about my system.

Christoph Paasch, thank you for providing the requested information. No need to further apport-collect unless requested specifically.

Despite this, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I did test upstream 3.13-rc3 and it is still failing. I updated the tags.

You think it's a kernel-bug? If that's the case, I can try a git bisect to see what commit caused it.

Christoph Paasch, given the problem is a regression going from Oneiric to Precise, it wouldn't hurt to bisect the kernel via https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection to shed more light on the issue. Be careful as the proprietary nvidia drivers many not work out using the mainline, or previous Ubuntu kernels.

I finally found the commit who causes the bug:

Author: Don Fry <email address hidden>
Date: Fri Sep 30 11:40:20 2011 -0700

iwlagn: rename iwlagn module iwlwifi and alias to iwlagn.

Rename the iwlagn module as iwlwifi in preparation for future
changes. Add an alias to iwlagn for backward compatibility.

Looks really strange to me, that this one is causing the bug.

Please provide a direct URL to your post once you have made it so that it may be tracked.
