Confirmation that EagleScreen's fix worked. In my case I ran:
chesky@maxwell:~$ sudo touch /boot/System.map-2.6.24-4-386 /boot/System.map-2.6.24-4-generic /boot/System.map-2.6.24-4-virtual chesky@maxwell:~$ sudo mkdir /lib/modules/2.6.24-4-386 /lib/modules/2.6.24-4-generic /lib/modules/2.6.24-4-virtual
and Synaptic removed the packages correctly.
