I found that "alsactl init" cannot be run in sudo. This command is called in the postinst script in alsa-utils.

$ sudo alsactl init
Home directory /home/ubuntu not ours.
socket(): Address family not supported by protocol
Found hardware: "SDP4430" "" "" "" ""
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
