NoOP, any idea what happens if you do this between step 1 and 2:

"Reboot with 2.3.22-14 Kernel"

I suspect the upgrade will go smoothly, since Martin Pitt said he didn't have any problems with upgrading a fresh gutsy installed (hence not an updated kernel)
