I ran into this very same problem with a brand new Intrepid kernel:

[~]$ uname -a
Linux satellite 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:24:39 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Took quite a while to isolate and debug. Disabling udftools (version 1.0.0b3-14) fixed it.
