Upgraded to Hardy kernel as described in the instructions at:
http://sudan.ubuntuforums.com/showthread.php?t=646755&page=33

uname -r:
2.6.24-11-generic

On the 32 bit machine, everything seems OK so far. Continuous playing of flac files for 14 hours did not induce an oops. With Gutsy kernel, the machine oopsed usually within 30 minutes of playing. So, most likely, the problem has been fixed in the Hardy kernel.

On the AMD64 machine, I cannot test because I hit a regression: The machine can not boot with the Hardy kernel:

And subsequently fails to mount the root filesystem. Note that these error messages are copied by hand from the boot screen, so there might be typing errors. I don't have the equipment for getting output from the serial console.

Asus A8V-XE motherboard
SATA controller: Via Technologies, Inc. VT8251 AHCI/SATA 4-Port Controller
I have a SATA hard disk attached to port 1 and a SATA DVD-burner attached to port 3.
No other disks. No problems with the Gutsy kernel.
