I may sound like a sucker but skipping asic_down() means that the dev->close()
handler will simply release the rx / tx rings (and their associated memory
buffers) and keep the Rx DMA engine of the card running. It is not a solution.
Can you give the attached patch a try against 2.6.31-rc ?
