Same here, on 2.6.22-14-generic, with Gutsy (7.10) 32bit version.

(Intel 915GAV, Pentium 4 3.0 GHz)

No solution proposed in the thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3331275 works here.
(Doing a 'sudo modprobe vesafb' after boot leads to blotches of colour in the virtual consoles.)
