I've got a new Dell Latitude D830, also with a built in Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem.

Gutsy did not pick up the hardware....

I had to fix it by supplying the usbserial module with some info:

modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8137

There after it created /dev/ttyUSB[01], and the modem works fine.
