Follow-up: usbserial works but will NOT cope with HSDPA data speeds, meaning it is not a viable solution for this HSDPA 3G modem.
The solution is to use the option driver, which actually supports the 413c:8138 card out-of-the-box in Hardy.
So, adding a line with "option" to /etc/modules and then rebooting solves this issue.
Now, can we have option loaded by default on boot in Intrepid? That would solve this bug...
