Same problem on a Lenovo 3000 N100 0768-6XG, running Hardy Alpha 3:

Unfortunately my battery is also fried, so the workaround of "unplug and replug the power cord" is not available to me (it has the nasty side-effect of turning off my laptop). It is also not the best approach to the problem, as I've discovered on those occasions when I've forgotten to "unplug and replug".

I'm up a creek without a paddle since suspend-to-RAM also does not work (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/86852/comments/50). Would you believe that I fully shut down my laptop at the end of every day, and boot it up fresh the next day? It's almost like I'm back in 1990....

I have searched for an indication of how to toggle/refresh the "battery-or-AC power" as Alex Ibrado suggests, but not found anything. I have a suspicion that the fan is embedded or BIOS-controlled, in which case it's perplexing that this is happening since it shouldn't be a software-related issue. By the way, this doesn't seem to be an isolated problem: some folks have been waiting almost a year for this problem to be fixed (bug #86852 and #85894)
