Regarding my last post, I managed to resolve my problem by downloading: rt2x00 nightly CVS tarball, from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Downloads
a couple of weeks ago. I still use the same kernel version.
If the drivers shipped with ubuntu are the same as the ones from rt2x00.serialmonkey.com, the problem may (for all I know) be fixed in CVS. It worked for me.
