Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available here: <http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems> Thanks!

OK, This bug was resolved for me with adding "acpi_cpufreq" to "/etc/modules" and removing things like

cpufreq_conservative
cpufreq_ondemand
cpufreq_powersave
cpufreq_stats
cpufreq_userspace
fuse

from this.

I have to state that I don´t run a Woodcrest, but a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU but also was suffering from this bug.

If you still need further Information, please let me know.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

i am running gutsy on xeon woodcrest. it is up date and i still get

ssam@oberon:~$ sudo modprobe acpi-cpufreq
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/modules/2.6.22-8-generic/kernel/arch/x86_64/kernel/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device

i can try with a live cd if you think it would make a difference.

I can report the same bug on the final 7.10 release. Booted off the Live CD. My machine is a Mac Pro 8-core.

This is an extremely annoying bug, it'd be great if someone could have a look at it. Tens of thousands of users must be having this very same problem. Thanks!

upstream have marked this invalid
"From acpidump does not seem to have any _PSS intofrmation in there. So, no
P-states can be supported. BIOS does not support P-states as per ACPI."

as best as i can understand the MacPro BIOS does not support p-states.

I have my woodcrest on a Tyan Tempest i5000XT (S2696), so might the BIOS be different?

i have attached the output of acpidump

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

The 18 month support period for Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 has reached its end of life -
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.10-eol . As a result, we are closing the
linux-source-2.6.22 kernel task. It would be helpful if you could test the
new Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release and confirm if this issue remains -
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/904overview. If the issue still exists with the Jaunty
release, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux (Ubuntu)"
task from "Incomplete" to "New". Also please be sure to run the command below
which will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this
report. Thanks in advance.
