Might be a hardware problem, now when windows mounts it it says it can only mount it at a lower speed, and some googling turns up quite a few t41/t42 thinkpads with messed up USB ports (out of warranty now). So it very well could be a hardware problem (gradually degraded possibly).
I tried the live cd of edgy and now that wont mount it either...
