Bug Description

With the new packaged kernel update in Feisty (2.6.20-16-generic), my cdrom on a gateway laptop won't automount anymore. I did a fresh feisty install on this machine.

When the -16-generic kernel boots, the cdrom device file is created at /dev/hda, but /dev/scd0 is the mount point in the fstab (yes, /dev/scd0, c before d).

When the -15-generic kernel boots, the cdrom device file is created at /dev/scd0, and everything works great.

I am not sure if this is a kernel bug or a module that got updated, as I'm not knowledgeable about that stuff.

In Places-> Computer there are two cdrom drives that show up, and there is only one cd drive on the computer. This does not happen when I boot the -15-generic kernel.

this may be related to Bug #94119

please can you add the following information to the bug

The make and model of the device (as much as you know)
The output from the uname -a > uname-a.log command
The output from the lspci -vvn > lspci-vvn.log command
The output from the lspci -vv > lscpi-vv.log command
The output from the dmesg > dmesg.log command

I reckon it is more likely to be Bug #117413 . We'll find out when that lspci arrives...

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking for with "make and model of device". The laptop is a Gateway MT6821 (intel chipsets), and I don't know much more about the make and model of the optical drive other than what dmesg tells me: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive.

In the bios, the drive is listed as a PATA (ide) drive. The hard drive is a SATA.

The dmesg and lspci logs are all from the 2.6.16-20-generic kernel. If you'd like me to boot to -15-generic and give new ones, just let me know.

Thanks for the help, if there's anything else I can provide, let me know!

Setting back to unconfirmed.

The SATA controller is an Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) IDE Controller (rev 02). I don't know what to make of this. The ICH7s I've used weren't affected by the "great rename" of Bug #116996 but it seems awfully coincidental that you are seeing the same beahviour at the same time as the problem started in that bug...

Is there any more info I can give?

My hard drive is indeed a sata drive, and hasn't been affected by the new kernel.

I also get the "ghost" cdrom showing up in nautilus when I open Places -> Computer, there's an extra "CD-ROM 1" which doesn't exist.

John:
In the short term you can report back on what happens the workaround described near the bottom of Bug #117413 ?

The workaround works, though the cdrom doesn't automount.

A kernel update a while ago removed this issue for me, so this bug can probably be closed.
