Non-existent optical (CDROM/DVD) drives after 2.6.20-16-generic kernel update on ICH4/ICH5 Intel chipsets

I have one cd-rom and one dvd-writer in my pc. After I updated the newest kernel three optical drives show up in my panel. The first one is nemade cdrom1, the second one cdrom2 and the third is named dd/dvdrw (or somthing like that). The first two cannot be mounted. When I put a cd in one of the devices, it is said to be in the dvd-writer, no matter in which drive i put it.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion. Your problem is tied to the ata_piix -> piix switch described in Bug #116996 (which caused the device rename) that happened with 2.6.20-16 on ICH4/ICH5 controllers. Because the the CD drives tend to be referenced using a /dev/ syntax (and don't make use of the /dev/cdrom symlinks) as UUIDs can't be used, there is no way they could survive such a rename. Could you upload your /etc/fstab file please?

My problem went away when I started the older kernel. Restart the computer, escape when the grub boot menu appears and select the older kernel (not recovery mode!). I will get back to you when I boot the new kernel again.

My mistake (I forgot you posted it "below the fold" in an earlier comment.

One solution (that would hopefully be driver agnostic) might be to use the /dev/cdrom symlinks in place of /dev/scd? in your /etc/fstab ...

I have the same problem with 2.6.20-16-generic (CD/DVD writer not detected anymore).
My workaround is to use the previous kernel 2.6.20-15-generic.

Highly unlikey. I don't know of any Ubuntu provided proprietary drivers for IDE controllers.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'.
