Bug Description

System: Toshiba Satellite A75-S229.
Previous Ubuntu version made the laptop Freeze while running Firefox from time to time.
This new version 7.04 will freeze every single time it is booted, just minutes if not seconds after logged in gnome, I suspect a lot it is a gnome problem, because in Single User Mode the system works without problems.

2 tests have been conducted: first, I upgraded from the previous version, and then the failures started right away. (Updated over the Internet with no problems).
Then because of the freezing situation, I formatted and installed from a verified CD. Same history, boot the system, work for some seconds after login and them CRASH!, the system starts to slow down and after 6 to 12 seconds, it locks up, some times you can move the mouse around, but nothing will work, some other times even the mouse freezes.

The laptop is ok, the system was tested for memory and everything, Windows XP works with no problems at all.

Sometimes the crash is when I do click an Icon in the menu, some other times just because..... Sky is blue?...
Other thing that happened before the full format, was evolution being killed the first time it was running after login...
Can't say if that happens after the format and clean install, because it is not giving enough time to test around before the freeze.

What to do/check/send/debug?

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.

I'm back with time to debug a little more.
I really think this is related to gnome not to the kernel, Evidence shows that.
I booted the machine 10 times, with 10 times going out of service, it starts to slow down then it does not respond to anything, not even Ctrl Alt F[123456]

I then started it in recovery mode, and from there, installed fvwm.
I am now running FVWM with no problems so far, after 30 minutes of work.

I have not checked yet if there are bugs related to gnome, but probably you can check faster.

I will try to load gnome module by module to see what is going on... if you ubuntu team have anything to add about debug procedures, please let me know...

It's actually a really easy fix... All you have to do is disable acpi. You can do this either when you install the system and boot of the cd, and in the boot menu, you hit F6, and add pci=noacpi during the first install, and it will keep that kernel flag on boot, or you can go into /boot/grub/menu.lst and add it. My menu.lst looks like

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=9dcd9144-013b-4463-bccc-e995d4357ade ro quiet splash pci=noacpi
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic

Hence the pci=noacpi in the kernel part.

Epidemic,

can you explain a little more what is this problem. I have a toshiba satellite P30 and on Edgy, I had a few freezing, particularly with soundjuicer and amarok. After upgrading on Feisty, the problem get worse and it was just always freezing for nothing as SkimO explained. At the beginning, when I was on Edgy, I tought it was because of soundjuicer because it was freezing very frequently when I was reaping a CD. I started a bug there : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/106790.

But because nobody answered me and because I had work to do, I returned in Win Xp. Now, I would like to try Ubuntu again, but I'm a little bit afraid of that. So, maybe if you explain more I can see if it is why my computer was freezing and I will feel more safe to return in Ubuntu.

thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what it is, I just know i've tested other distributions such as fedora cores, and every single one of them I had to disable acpi (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface). All I know is I use a Toshiba Satellite A75 (which i'm on right now) and I looked into it for fedora and people were saying to disable acpi using pci=noacpi and my laptop does not freeze at all and works perfectly. The problem I was having though, was after about 20 minutes or so being loaded into any linux system on this satellite a75, everything would freeze except for the mouse. The mouse would move but clicking didn't do anything and there wasn't any keyboard response.

JSGosselin, edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst (either sudo it or go into root and edit it) and scroll down till you find title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (should be this, but you may have a different kernel version). on the line that starts with kernel go to the end of the line (after "ro quiet splash" which should be at the end of the kernel line) add "pci=noacpi" without the quotes. Best copy and paste it so there aren't any typo errors. Save the file and reboot.

If you're just going to reinstall, when you put the cd in, and boot off the cd, and get the main menu asking you what you want to do. Hit your F6 key, and you'll get a big long line underneath everything. Don't delete anything. Just add pci=noacpi and hit enter. Then it should boot up with that, and install like normal. The install will remember that you put it in there, so you wont have to modify the /boot/grub/menu.lst file

JSGosselin..

The good news, is it seems acpi is the problem...
I just went back to my place, and the first thing I did was to modify
the grub and boot my laptop...

Well, 25 minutes have passed and it is working fine.. I also know, acpi
has created problems before....

ACPI provides some tools to monitor and manage parts of the laptop, from

But at least I can run Ubuntu on my computer and it is not always freezing for no reason. It was doing that since I intalled Ubuntu for the first time, so 2 month ago. lol I was searching for a solution all this time! But in Edgy, it was not as bad as in Feisty. I'm new to linux as you can see.

Do you think that the problem that we have with the ACPI is a bug or it is simply a configuration that is not ok? What I'm trying to say is do you think that the fact that we have to turned off the ACPI option, is it a bug in Ubuntu or it is because my computer can't support this option...I don't know if I'm clear...

It is a kernel bug though that i've noticed in every distribution yet though. So I think it's more leaned on the hard out kernel developers more then anyone. Until then though, adding this does work. Your laptop won't blow up from not having ACPI enabled in the OS.

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. I'm going to mark this "Fix Released" against Hardy. If and when you get a chance to test Intrepid, please let us know if you witness any regressions regarding this bug. If you do see regressions please set the status from "Fix Released" back to "New". Thanks.

Changed in linux:
status: Incomplete → Fix Released

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
