Hooray! I just booted with the newest kernel that was updated by the Update Manager and now my keyboard works with no acpi=off. I've tried both kernels (linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20-16.28_i386.deb) posted by you Phillip Lougher on 2007-05-17 and 2007-05-21.
I have a VIA KT266A / VIA VT8233 chipset on an ABIT KR7A-RAID motherboard.
