I resolved this issue by making the following changes as recommended on thinkwiki:

/etc/acpi/suspend.d/10-thinkpad-standby-led.sh
* Add to the bottom of the file: /etc/init.d/powernowd stop

/etc/acpi/resume.d/90-thinkpad-unstandby-led.sh
* Add to the bottom of the file: /etc/init.d/powernowd start

/etc/acpi-support
* Change POST_VIDEO=true to POST_VIDEO=false

I think the third change is the key for resolving this specific issue. I have not heard anything in over a month and the latest updates have not fixed the problem.
