I am experiencing the same problems in an up-to-date edgy. Has the fix been released because the problem still exists on my machine? My wifi card worked well with the hostap drivers in dapper. My card details are similar to Pascal's above:

sudo pccardctl ident output:

Socket 0:
product info: "Wireless LAN", "11Mbps PC Card", "Version 01.02", ""
  manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002
  function: 6 (network)

I tried adding the card to /etc/pcmcia/hostap_cs.conf after blacklisting the orinoco_cs module like this:

card "Generic 11Mbps WLAN PC Card"
version "Wireless LAN", "11Mbps PC Card", "Version 01.02"
   manfid 0x0156, 0x0002
   bind "hostap_cs"

but it doesn't seem to work (because of new pcmcia system??). I also tried to compile the hostap drivers from the hostap-source package but it would not compile (maybe I should raise another ticket for this?)
