I reinstalled the i386 kernel (2.6.15-25) and running that I have no problem with automatic shutdown. The i686 kernel (also 2.6.15-25) does not work still, I have to manually switch it off when it hangs during shutdown will now halt.

I hope this is something that can be fixed, I thank you all for your time and work with this great distribution (ubuntu 6.06).
