Hello all.
I used to use Xubuntu Edgy a while ago on an old HP desktop I had -- aside from an issue with the Hibernate function, Suspend, Restart and Shutdown worked seamlessly.

Then I installed Kubuntu Edgy on my primary computer (Acer Aspire E360, AMD64 Athlon X2) roughly a month ago and experienced similar problems as described here. Restart and Shutdown would occasionally direct me to a frozen black screen, and Suspend, while it did work, would make the system unstable upon wake up. [Hibernate I never tested]

Now that I've upgraded to Feisty, the Suspend issue seems resolved, but the problem with Shutdown and Restart continues to persist. I tried the suggestion of adding "apm power_off=1" to /etc/modules, but the only thing that did was make the "Will now Halt" message visible.

This at least describes my own take on the problem, but I agree with Philipi and WillyWongi that the problem is a bit more far-ranging than it seems, and likely the reason why the problem has not been universally fixed after 3 releases. Understandably, it is an annoying issue, and one that detracts from the polish of the distros; but as long as it is being gradually fixed for more and more users, a little more patience is called for. The issue can be fixed, since I can confirm for a fact that Knoppix performs those tasks flawlessly.

In the meantime, in order to Restart and Shutdown my machine without incident, I do the following:

- I either go into the Terminal and use the 'sudo shutdown -h now' (or 'sudo shutdown -r now' for restart)

- Or I Log Out, and use Restart/Shutdown from the Kubuntu login screen (for some odd reason, these always work).
