I have a similar issue on Dell Inspiron 5150 (ATI Radeon 9000 Mobility video, not the NVidia variant). Choosing Suspend to disk or ram causes suspend to begin, but after backlight is switched off, the fan comes on full blast and nothing more happens. Suspend is not successful in any case.

Reverting to kernel 2.6.15-21 works for me, I haven't tried any more recent versions.

I can confirm that 2.6.15-26 does not work for me.
