I am not on Ubuntu, but on OpenSuSE, but I thought I'll post here anyway:

I had a similar problem, in that sudden key repeat would happen, and also mouse events sometimes were unpredictable.

I finally found an entry in some forum that said that replacing the SMP kernel, which was installed automatically, by the default, non-SMP kernel did the trick. I tried it, and can now finally return to normal operations under linux - although my confidence has been seriously damaged. 2 days of hacking - better not talk about TCO here.

Anyway, there seems to be a problem between SMP (which should be the right choice given that I have a dual core processor) and some periphery drivers (synaptics touchpad?).
