Cannot install to hde

Product: Dapper 12/18/05 build

Computer is older PIII with Asus motherboard. I have a Maxtor 60G harddrive attached to a PCI controller card which
makes the hard drive seen as /dev/hde.The controller is a Promise 100TX. During the hardware detection, installer
stops with message "cannot find a harddisk controller". There are 2 PDC modules listed "new" and "old" but neither
work (ie, you select and enter and the same message repeats).

I tried rebooting with a Dapper install already on the hard drive using kernel 2.6.15-8 and got the following boot errors:
