Have you investigated using the softvol pcm plugin? You'll need to create an ~/.asoundrc and then use the virtual ALSA device directly (not esound) as documented at http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/alsa-lib/pcm_plugins.html (at the bottom).
